How can innovative solutions developed across European projects translate into lasting impact for our oceans, seas and inland waters?
This question was at the centre of the 9th REMEDIES Cluster Meeting, held online on 17 September 2026. Organised by F6S, Impact Hub Athens and the National Institute of Chemistry (NIC), the event connected the European Commission, EU Mission Ocean and Waters projects, research networks, regional initiatives and innovation actors, attracting 90 registrations and 53 participants.
The meeting also marked an important moment for the F6S Blue Economy Synergy, featuring dedicated sessions that brought several Synergy projects together to share experiences in stakeholder engagement and regional participation. From EU Mission Ocean and Waters priorities and REMEDIES results to project presentations, funding opportunities and a roundtable on stakeholder engagement, discussions explored how innovation can move beyond individual projects towards wider deployment, replication and lasting impact.
From EU Mission priorities to REMEDIES results
The meeting opened with Vesna Kuralt, REMEDIES Project Manager at the National Institute of Chemistry (NIC), and Lina Silveira from F6S, framing the discussion around the need to connect policy, research and local implementation. John Hanus, Team Leader for Mission Ocean and Waters at the European Commission, then highlighted the transition from testing and demonstration towards deployment, replication and scale-up.
Uroš Novak, REMEDIES Coordinator at NIC, presented key REMEDIES achievements and lessons from the project’s work on plastic and microplastic pollution, spanning clean-up mobilisation, monitoring and removal technologies, zero-waste solutions, citizen science and support for associated regions.
Blue Economy Synergy in action: From project insights to funding opportunities
The dedicated session offered F6S Blue Economy Synergy projects the opportunity to share their experience and lessons learned through a series of presentations, from engaging local communities and managing multi-partner networks to driving regional participation.
Pedro Roseiro from TICE.PT presented ADT4Blue, sharing lessons from supporting blue economy entrepreneurship and connecting digital technologies with industry challenges. Catarina Reis from F6S introduced SALINA and its work on sustainable algae cultivation, digital monitoring and biorefinery pathways.
Oriane Georges from F6S presented Restore4Life and its tools for wetland restoration and stakeholder dialogue, while Dániel Szántó from the General Directorate of Water Management (OVF) shared DALIA’s multi-actor approach across the Danube River Basin.
The meeting then moved to cascade funding and regional integration, with Oriane Georges presenting opportunities linked to SUNDANSE and TASC-RestoreMed, including funding for local and regional authorities and support for transition agendas. Participants were also directed to TASC-RestoreMed’s Community-Led Actions and Transition Agendas Development pages for further information.
Roundtable discussion: Overcoming the friction points in engagement
The final roundtable, moderated by Lina Silveira from F6S, brought together Eirini Apazoglou of EuroMarine Network and Meri Turó Silanes of ICM-CSIC to discuss on the challenges of policy alignment, maintaining citizen momentum and lasting replication across the Mediterranean, in a practical and dynamic exchange of ideas, experiences and views, engaging and connecting the participants with the similar challenges and interests.
The discussion also highlighted the importance of providing value to stakeholders at different stages, coordinating engagement across projects and adapting replication to local realities, particularly in small regions and islands, as well as in outermost regions. The conversation addressed different research, municipalities and citizen timelines, maintaining community momentum and overcoming stakeholder fatigue.
