HyLiST, the new EU-funded project joining the battery industry green revolution

The HyLiST project (Hybrid Lithium Metal-based Scalable Solid State Battery Manufacturing), was officially launched with a Kick-off Meeting held on January 14th and 15th in Vienna.

As the project coordinator, the Austrian Institute of Technology hosted the event, welcoming the consortium members for two days of collaboration, brainstorming, and strategic discussions. The meeting set the foundation for the successful implementation of the project and the achievement of its ambitious goals.

With a total of 13 partners from 9 countries, the consortium is a multidisciplinary and expertise-led group that includes Austrian Institute of Technology, IFP Energies Nouvelles, CIC energiGUNE Fundazioa, Fundación Cidetec, Pulsedeon OY, Sovema Group, Specific Polymers, Uppsala University, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Tampereen Korkeakoulusaatio Sr, Piaggio Aerospace, F6S, and FEV Europe.

The project will be implemented for 36 months with a total budget of €8M, in which the consortium will focus on the development of next-generation solid-state batteries (SSBs) that utilises cutting-edge materials and technologies, including cobalt-free lithium nickel manganese oxide (LNMO) cathodes, lithium metal (LiM) anodes, and hybrid polymer solid electrolytes (HSIPE). The innovative solution will address the need for safer, more energy-efficient, and high-performance batteries, primarily aimed at the automotive and aeronautic sectors.

Additionally, HyLiST will bridge the gap between laboratory-scale development and industrial-scale manufacturing by scaling up the technology to Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6. It will demonstrate the manufacturing of high-performance SSBs at a pilot line level, with the goal of introducing these technologies to the broader automotive and aeronautic markets by 2027-2030.

HyLiST propositions contribute to reduced net-emissions, with positive spill-over economic, social and environmental impacts. It will have significant impacts across several dimensions, aligning with the global push toward decarbonisation, the electrification of transportation, and sustainable manufacturing practices.
