PaluWise project launches to revolutionise degraded peatland restoration

PaluWise, an EU-funded project dedicated to the sustainable use of rewetted degraded peatland ecosystems, has officially launched. Through four large-scale demonstration sites across Finland, the Netherlands, Poland, and the United Kingdom, PaluWise will showcase and validate best practices in paludiculture, transforming degraded organic soils into thriving, productive landscapes.

Coordinated by Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) based in Oulu (Finland), the PaluWise consortium brings together a dynamic group of stakeholders from eight European countries, each contributing to the paludiculture value chain.

With the goal of supporting EU climate objectives and nature restoration actions, PaluWise will employ a multi-actor approach in these demonstrations and provide recommendations for large-scale deployment throughout the EU. Acknowledging the crucial role of peatlands in climate regulation and biodiversity, PaluWise four demonstration sites will serve as dynamic case studies, showcasing innovative techniques for transforming degraded organic soils into productive paludiculture systems.

By bridging the gap between research and practical application, PaluWise project will empower stakeholders, from landowners and policymakers to businesses and communities, with the knowledge and tools needed to embrace paludiculture as a sustainable and impactful land management strategy.

The PaluWise initiative officially began with a two-day kick-off meeting on March 18th and 19th, held in Oulu, Finland. During the meeting, consortium partners presented the project’s roadmap and participated in discussions highlighting collaborative efforts related to key milestones, strategic approach, demonstration site activities, and dissemination plans that will drive the PaluWise’s success.
